What are Viruses?
A computer virus is a piece of software that is designed to copy itself and spread from computer to computer. Typically this is done without any knowledge or permission from the user.

Viruses are executables (.exe files) that add their codes to your computer in such a way that when you load a particular program or file then the virus is activated also.

Types of Virus
There are several different types of virus; they can infect computers in different ways and cause varying amounts of damage. Some will attack your hard drive whilst others attach themselves to files and executables.

However regardless of the specific type of virus they all try and do the same thing;DAMAGE YOUR COMPUTER.

What types of Damage can a Virus Cause?
Viruses can cause a number of different problems on your computer. They can infect your hard drive (very serious) or they can attach themselves to all outgoing e mail in order to infect other computers.

Damage can also be caused when trying to remove a virus, possibly by corrupting other files and programmes.

Other viruses allow hackers to take control of your computer and give them access to all your files. In addition a hacker can use your computer to infect other computers.

How can I Avoid Viruses?
The huge majority of viruses are sent by e mail. Therefore it is very important to have some type of anti-virus software in place that scans all the e mails sent to you.

Another way in which a computer can be infected by a virus is through downloads.

Downloads from major blue chip companies (Microsoft, Winzip etc.) normally have safety certificates to check prior to any downloads. However downloads from other companies over the Internet can be infected.

*ALWAYS TAKE EXTRA CARE WHEN DOWNLOADING ANYTHING FROM THE INTERNET*
