/ Class Room / Internet Help Guide / Searching on the World Wide Web

The World Wide Web contains millions and millions of pages of information.  Searching through this information can sometimes be impossible – it is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

It is very easy to find lots of web sites, but these do not always contain the information that you want, and sometimes it seems that you are never going to find what you want to know.  However, don’t get upset or annoyed if you can’t find something…

Just follow the simple rules on the next few pages, and you will be able to search the Internet easily and quickly.

There are a number of ways of searching the Internet.

The first (and most time-consuming) is to visit the web sites that you already know about and click on their relevant hyperlinks, which look like they could take you to the information that you need.  However, searching in this way is quite likely not to take you to the right location and it could in fact lead you in the wrong direction.

Luckily, there are some very special web sites on the Internet.  These are called search engines and they make it much easier to find the information (and the web pages) that you need.

All you have to do is visit a search engine, tell it what you would like to find out about, and it will show you hyperlinks, which point to the information that you have requested.

This is normally done by entering a word that you want to find more information about. For example, if you are looking for information on computer games you should enter the words ‘Computer games’ into the space provided on the search engine web site.

However, sometimes, it might point you to information, which is not quite what you were looking for. For example, if you entered ‘Computer Games’, the search engine may give you a list of web sites for Computer games, computers and games. So, it is very important that you learn how to use these search engines correctly, because it will help you to find information more quickly and easily.
