Using Internet chat rooms is a great way to relax and talk to new people.
However do you know and understand all the DANGERS involved when using a chat room?

There are 6 golden rules that should be followed at all times:

1. Remember not everyone in a chat room is who they say they are. They may be trying to trick you.

2. Never give anyone in a chat room the following information:

  • your telephone number
  • your full name
  • your home address
  • your school name or address
  • your e mail address
  • any other information which may give people a clue as to where you live, who you are, etc.

3. NEVER meet with anyone that you originally met in a chat room. If you insist on meeting someone, take a trusted adult with you.

*THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT*

4. It is always better to chat in an open chat room than in a private chat room.

5. Only open files and attachments from people you know and trust - someone may be sending you a virus. (see our virus page).

6. If you feel uncomfortable about anything that is happening online just shut down your computer.

If you are receiving nasty e mails and/ or messages from anyone through a chatroom tell your parents or a teacher.

If you feel uncomfortable about telling someone that you know, you can e mail Infomat.net by clicking here and we will deal with the problem for you so that you will stop being bothered. Remember to give us all the information we need to help you.

Other technologies now exist that work in tandem with chatrooms and allow users to talk with each other in a safe environment where no personal details are exchanged. In fact Secure Voice Messaging actually takes the concept of chatrooms one stage further since you actually get to chat! And it’s TOTALLY FREE to use!!!
