   Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins are nutrients required in very small amounts for essential metabolic reactions in the body. Other essential nutrients for health include many dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids. A large number of other nutrients exist in foods that promote health, but are not classed as essential for life.

Until the 19th Century, vitamins were obtained solely through food intake. Many food sources contain different ratios of vitamins. Therefore, if the only source of vitamins is food, changes in diet will alter the types and amounts of vitamins ingested. However, as the body can store many vitamins, short-term deficiencies do not usually lead to medical problems.

Vitamins and minerals have been made widely available in capsule, tablet, powder and liquid forms for several decades and allow for supplementation of the daily dietary intake.
