In 1860, Mrs Mary Tealby set up the Temporary Home for
Lost and Starving Dogs in Holloway, North London. A year
later the Home received encouragement and support from
Charles Dickens, who wrote an article on the subject.
The Home clearly met a need because the Metropolitan
Police contracted the Home to deal with the stray dogs
and cats of London. In 1871 the Home moved to Battersea
and it’s present site.
Back then we received even more dogs a year than we do
now. In 1881 we received almost 16,000 dogs, in 1886 we
received 35,000 dogs and in 1896 the Home had its
biggest intake ever by receiving 42,500 dogs. Compared
to the 1990's, when we received around 10,000 dogs a
year, the 1890's saw a lot more dogs needing our help. |

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has enjoyed Royal patronage
for most of it’s history. In 1885, Queen Victoria became
patron, followed by King Edward VII, King George V and
Queen Elizabeth II. The Home has also been able to offer
support and help at times of national crisis, accepting
the dogs of serviceman serving in the trenches of World
War I and providing dogs for special training and
service in World War II.
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has cared for cats since
1883. To give our feline friends equal status we changed
our name to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in 2005.
There are three sites, all dedicated to helping lost and
abandoned dogs and cats.

Battersea
Dogs & Cats Home is probably the most famous animal
rescue centre in the world. Its aims are expressed by
the four R’s to Rescue, Reunite, Rehabilitate and Rehome
the lost and abandoned dogs and cats that come into it’s
care.
Rescue:
The Home has been rescuing lost, stray and unwanted dogs
for over 140 years. This started with providing a
temporary home for lost dogs and soon escalated into a
formal agreement with the Metropolitan police to remove
stray dogs and cats from the streets.
Reunite:
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home receives nearly 8,000 dogs
and 3,000 cats every year, of which over 4,000 dogs and
900 cats are strays, picked up off the streets of
London. Every lost animal has an owner somewhere and the
Home runs the Lost Dogs and Cats Line which works in
conjunction with the police, local authority animal
wardens, other animal rescue charities and veterinary
surgeries as the central database for strays in London.
The Home was one of the pioneers of microchipping dogs
and cats for easy identification and in 1993 introduced
a computerised animal registration system.

Rehabilitate:
Every animal that comes into the Home is given a
behavioural and temperament assessment. The Home’s
Behaviour department helps dogs and cats with
behavioural problems to prepare them for a new home and
gives advice and behaviour programs to new owners.
‘After-Sales’ support is also available through
Battersea’s Behaviour Advice Line.
Rehome:
The ultimate aim of the Home is to find dogs and cats
loving, permanent new homes. The Home uses the most
up-to-date technology to match dogs and cats to suitable
owners.
