New additions to Bridgeman Collection
We are delighted to announce that subscribers to our unique
education service can now benefit from an even greater range of
images. The Bridgeman Art Library now represents The Benaki
Museum in Athens, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Staatliche
Museen Kassel in Germany and Peter Newark Pictures in the US.
Each museum holds a fascinating and extensive collection of
artworks, allowing us to build on our existing material, such as
Ancient Egyptian and Classical imagery, as well as to expand
into new areas, such as the culture of 19th and 20th century
Western America. Many of these images are available to Bridgeman
Education users, and more are being added every day.
The Benaki Museum, Athens
The Benaki Museum in Athens is the oldest museum in Greece
and has over 30, 000 items in its collection. The museum has a
staggering range of art works from prehistoric Greece through
the Classical and Hellenistic periods of ancient Greece and on
to the Roman period. The collection also features Byzantine,
Islamic and Chinese art as well as European art up to the early
twentieth century and antique jewellery and toys.
The Israel Museum, Jerusalem
The Museum's fine art collections offer a rich selection of
European Old Masters of singular importance, an impressively
strong holding of modern and contemporary art, and a
comprehensive presentation of Israel's artistic achievement over
the last hundred years. Equally remarkable is the strength of
the museum's collecting in the arts of Asia, Africa, Oceania and
the Americas, and its depth in the fields of prints, drawings,
photography, design and architecture. The museum's collection of
Judaica and Jewish ethnography, as well as Holy Land
antiquities, is considered the most comprehensive and important
in the world. Hundreds of images from the Israel museum are
available to our subscribers, with more being constantly added.
Staatliche Museen Kassel
The Staatliche Museen Kassel is one of the largest and most
important collections of fine art in Germany. It unites six
museums including the Painting Gallery of Old Masters, which
houses the biggest European collection of Rembrandts outside the
Netherlands. Unique in Germany is the wallpaper museum with its
broad range of German, French and English wallpapers and pattern
books. The other collections display painting and sculpture
since 1750, antiquities, hunting and Hessian military weapons,
prehistoric objects, scientific instruments, decorative items
such as porcelain, ivory and amber as well as traditional
Hessian objects.
Peter Newark Pictures
This is an extensive source of American historical images
from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a particular emphasis on
Western Americana, military and historical images covering the
Gold Rush, transportation, pioneers, music, the Great Depression
and slavery. The archive has already digitised 2000 of these
amazing images, which are available on our website, and is
continuously adding more.
