The Centre runs courses in the following trades.
Foundation Courses in
 
This course lasting a week is set out to
give you as many bricklaying skills as
possible in five days. From mixing mortar to
pointing, and to being able to build walls
plumb, vertical, level and square.
You will also learn how to build in a damp
course, build a cavity wall, a block wall, a
pillar and garden walls with piers and an
arch.

You will learn the basics of household
plumbing from fitting a tap washer through
to achieving a good understanding of the hot
and cold water systems and a central heating
system. Other aspects include how to fit a
bath, sink and toilet. How to fit a new
cold-water tank and how to handle, bend and
solder copper piping, fit a float valve,
repair pipe work and much more besides
This course should give you the confidence,
skills and knowledge to complete your own
projects or set you on the first rung of the
ladder to a lucrative plumbing career. This
is also a weeklong course. |
This
weeklong plastering course will teach you how to
correctly cut and fix plasterboard to ceiling and
walls, prepare surfaces to receive rendering of sand
and cement mixes or back up plasters, cutting and
applying beading including applying angle beads to
form external corners and window reveals, applying
bonding, applying sand and cement as backing coats,
apply finishing plaster, re-plaster existing walls
to a flat level surface ready for decoration and
patch broken areas with an invisible repair.
You will have a good knowledge of the practical
skills of plastering on completion of this course.

This 5 day
practical course consists of fixing felt to roof,
cutting, spacing and fitting battens, tiling a roof
using slate, interlocking tiles and peg tiles and
flat roofing You will also be taught how to point
and bed ridge tiles, point a gable end and finning
properly the hip end of the roof.
You will learn how to fit the ‘Velux’ (skylight)
window with flashing kit and the tiling around it.
Around the dormer window you will be taught how to
fit a lead valley, aluminium valley, and valley
tiles, and around the chimneystack you will fit a
lead apron and learn the skill of step lead
flashing. By the end of the course we believe that
you will be more than satisfied with the many
aspects of roofing that you have managed to learn,
you should have a good understanding of the skills
and techniques required.
All this is taught on a specially designed mock-up
roof at ground level.
The Centre also provides a one-day course where you
will be working on a specially designed mock-up roof
at ground level.
This practical course consists of fixing felt to
roof, cutting, spacing and fitting battens, tiling a
roof, pointing and bedding ridge tiles pointing a
gable end.
You will be taught how to cut tiles, replace a
broken tile, and fix lead flashing into a wall and
how to cut lead flashing for an ornate finish.
During
this intensive hands-on 5-day course you will be
taught the complete construction of a timber roof
with a hip and gable end, along with some of the
tricks of the trade. It helps if you have some basic
carpentry skills, but not essential. The course
covers -
How to set out the site, calculate and measure
rafter distances, cutting and pitching a roof,
cutting common rafters, measuring your span in
relation to your roof, attaching the wall plate,
cutting the angles of hip jacks, King rafters and
hips, fixing purlins. purlin struts and respective
birdsmouth cuts, and other roof member cuts. How to
make templates of roof members, and gaining an
understanding of different roof types.
This
weekend course covers the practical skills from
fitting a plug and calculating correct fuse rating
to installing a ring main. You will achieve a basic
understanding of bonding, earthing and safety
techniques, learn about a standard lighting circuit
(3 plate ceiling rose) 2 way lighting circuit, ring
mains (13 amp sockets), spur outlets, zone lighting
and power, calculating loading and correct cable
sizing, consumer units and security lighting.
Advanced courses are available to qualify for Part P
registration
During
this practical week long course you will learn how
to:-
Make a mortise and tenon joint, a single dovetail
joint, a reverse mortise joint.
Build a 2-panel door and erect a section of stud
partitioning, fix a doorframe to the partitioning
and hang a hinged door, as well as cut in a lock and
letterbox.
Cut in an internal skirting board. You will also
learn how to construct a sawing stool, a saw block
and a building square – all to take home.
During the
5 days on this course your toolkit will be fully
explained to you, including using a wet cutter and
dry cutter, you will be taught how to set out your
tiling work, you will be tiling walls and floors
using tiling beads, tiling around obstacles like
sinks, baths, basins, toilet cisterns, pans, showers
etc. to achieve a professional finish. You will
learn about different types of adhesives, grouting
and applications, using silicon and sealants
During the course you will be given advice on
pricing a job and various tips of the trade.
At the end of the course you will be given handouts
and notes about the techniques of tiling and the
materials used, and you will receive a BTC
certificate.
This
weekend kitchen-fitting course is designed to teach
you how to get the perfect cut on worktops using a
router, jig and cutter to achieve the professional
kitchen fitter’s finish
You will also be taught how to fit high and
low-level kitchen cabinets, adjust the doors, fit
the worktops, cut cornices and pelmets and to cut
out for a sink and a hob. You will also be given
advice on kitchen design.
