Review of AS
mathematics
|
Last year saw an extensive review on the
implications and impact the new requirements for AS mathematics were
having on teaching, learning and achievement. As a consequence, QCA has
revised the core content criteria. These revised specifications will be
taught from September 2004, with first AS examinations in 2005 and first
A level examinations in 2006. |
In the revised specifications, there will
be no units in which candidates are permitted to use only a scientific
calculator. Instead there will be a single AS unit in which no
calculator or calculating aid will be permitted.
“The scientific
calculator arrangements have been removed as they had a negative effect
on the use of graphic calculators. They have been replaced with a
requirement that one AS core unit, either C1 or C2, will be assessed
without the support of any calculating aid. Candidates are free to use
a graphic calculator in all other mathematics papers”.
