Scaffolder

Name:
Kevin Roney
Age:
17
Qualifications:
Working towards SVQ 3 in Scaffolding

Why did you chose this career?
"I wanted a real challenge! My parents encouraged me as they knew a few scaffolders and I did a taster course at college."

What do you do day-to-day?
"I work all over the country putting up different types of scaffolding systems that are used for roofing, cleaning stonework etc. You get a great view from a 200 foot high scaffold!"

Good bits about your job?
"I enjoy the variety of work and the places I go to. Scaffolding's all about working as part of a team - and the pay's good too."

What does the future hold?
"I would like to do off-shore work on oil rigs and run my own business."

Building Technician

Name: Gurarjan Shaan
Age: 18
Qualifications:
Studying NC Architectural Studies

Why did you choose this career?
"I've always liked drawing and design and been interested in how buildings were put up, so when I saw this job, I just went for it!"

What do you do day-to-day?
"I spend some time in the office, but I'm out and about a lot too. I'm working on a £5million project just now and it's really exciting being involved."

What advice would you give prospective students?
"It's a good course, you learn loads... and at the end of the day I'll come out with a really good job.

Good bits about your job?
"I get to meet lots of different people and learn how a whole building is put together, not just parts of it."

Architect

Name: Karen Nugent
Age: 29
Qualifications:
BSc Architectural Studies, RIBA part 3

Why did you choose this career?
"I wanted to go to university to do something that combined science and the arts. I was interested in design and problem solving, the effect of the environment on how people live and work. This fitted the bill perfectly."

What do you do day-to-day?
"It's a juggling act! I have several projects all at different stages. I might be meeting the client and preparing sketches, doing a design on the computer or dealing with planning. When it gets to construction, I need to supervise the work on site and deal with the contractor's queries."

What advice would you give prospective students?
"Pay attention to what you see - you'll need to be able to articulate your reasons for choosing a design. Read as much as you can about architecture, both historical and modern."

Social aspects to your job?
"We have twice yearly visits to a European city to study the architecture of that city. So far I've been to Rome, Lisbon, Oslo and Barcelona. It's a great chance to relax and get to know my colleagues better, it's great fun and gives the staff a great lift."
