What is tartar?
Tarter, also called calculus, is plaque which has hardened to your teeth. Tarter can form at and underneath the gum line. It is a hard, yellow-coloured substance that  provides  a base for plaque to grow, and so can cause more problems such as cavities and gum disease.

How do I know if I have tartar?
If you have tartar, it can be seen where your teeth meet your gums. However, it is not always easy to see. Your dentist will be able to tell you if you have a significant build-up of tartar and will advise you of what action to take.

How can tarter build up be prevented?

Proper brushing

Tarter control toothpaste
Flossing

How can tartar be removed?
Once tarter has built up the only way to remove it is by visiting the dentist where the hygienist will perform a process called scaling. The Hygienist will use special instruments to remove the tartar on your teeth above and below the gum line. For more information about the Hygienist -
