  Do's and Don'ts

Make the CV stand out for all the RIGHT reasons.

  • Aim to impress, but do not let your imagination run riot.
  • Keep your CV to the point, on two sides of A4 paper maximum.
  • Attention to detail! Avoid jargon and embellishment.
  • Make it easy to read - type it.
  • Spell check it! Check its grammar.
  • Include all the relevant information.
  • Use formal business writing principles.
  • Avoid any form of humor or slang.
  • Don’t include a picture unless you apply for a job in the Far East or entertainment.
  • Try to avoid chronological gaps in employment or educational history.
  • Get someone who has a good command of the English language to read it.
  • Select an easy to navigate format - but avoid standard layouts if possible.
  • Try a layout that is a little different - remember they are asking for a CV not a standard application form, so maybe they are looking for something a little different.

Sometimes employers don’t give enough information about the job and what they are looking for. Ask for more details if needed. Spend time researching about the job that interests you and information about the employer – the company structure, products, successes, and approaches. You can normally find such information from:
  • Their own publicity, reports and publications
  • Newspaper reports
  • The Internet
  • Your recruitment consultant/careers advisor
  • Networking contacts
