Company History

1856: Smith & Nephew companies founded in the UK, in Hull.  Best selling product: cod liver oil.

1930’s: Products available were:
Elastoplast Bandages: original and finest elastic adhesive plaster bandage. Hospitals and general practice.
Elastoplast First Aid Dressings: supplied in handy tins, ready to cut to size, elastic, antiseptic, adhesive.
Elastoplast Boil Dressings: containing Mercury and Carbolic medication, to eliminate hot foments.
Elastoplast Corn Rings
Elastocrepe super Elastic clothe bandage:
for leg affections, sprains, strains…
Elastocrepe Wrist Straps: with special elastic and button fastener.
Elastoplast Cushioned: rubber for a better comfort
Elastoplast Finger Dressings: Elastoplast Porous plasters.
Viscopaste Bandages: for eczematous conditions, ulcers, Elephantiasis…
Semiplast Bandages: only the first turn of the plaster touches the skin. Reduces risk of irritation.

 

 

1940’s: Range extended to Burn Dressing, Vaccination Dressings, Eyes Dressings and First aid Outfits.

1990’s: Introduction of new type of plasters such as Sensitive, Ultra repair. Then Skinvisible –based on Polyurethane technology.

2001-2005: Launch of more advanced plasters like Faster Healing Plaster, Scar Reduction and SilverHealing. Based on new concept and new substrates, they perform better than average plasters, and are added-value products.

  • To date Beiersdorf has produced more than 16 billion metres of Elastoplast plasters – enough to circle the globe 400 times.

  • With children more susceptible to cuts and grazes, Elastoplast was the first brand to introduce the character plaster to the market, with the launch of Mickey Mouse plasters* in 1989. Over the years a series of plasters has followed, including characters such as Winnie the Pooh** and Disney Princesses*.

  • As brand leader, Elastoplast is also seen as a strong innovator, thanks to its advanced wound-care range. The range includes a Burn Relief Spray and Burn Plasters, Scar Reduction Plasters, Faster Healing Plasters and Aqua Protect Plasters.

  • In 2005, Elastoplast launched SILVERHEALING, the first range of mass-market plasters and dressings to harness the natural antiseptic power of metallic silver.

  • Elastoplast Sport was launched in 2003 as an extension of the Elastoplast brand.

  • Within less than two years of its launch, Elastoplast Sport has built a reputation as one of the leading brands in the Sports Supports market. It is now No.3 in the market. (IRI, Value Share of Type, October 2005).
