SILVER HEALING™   -   Benefits of Silver

Most germs are able to develop resistance against antimicrobial agents, a big problem in the treatment of infections with antibiotics.

The advantage of silver is that micro-organisms show a low tendency to develop resistance against silver-based products, and it has been used for thousands of years as an antiseptic.

The resistance of special germs to silver ions is known, but is restricted to a few microbes. Emergence of new microbial resistance to silver is considered rare and cross-resistance between silver and antibiotics is rare also.

So how is silver different to antiseptics?

Germs are able to develop resistance against most antimicrobial agents, hence the development of the MRSA super bug. But micro-organisms show a very low tendency to develop resistance against silver. Antiseptics are effective only on their first application but if bacteria are not destroyed immediately, they double every 20 minutes. Controlled release of silver ions into the wound provides a safer, long lasting effect for the time the plaster is worn.

Unlike many antiseptics that can irritate the skin, silver’s allergic potential is low with very few recorded cases of irritation.

Elastoplast SILVERHEALING™ plasters and dressings are available in leading supermarkets and chemists, in the form of Fabric Strips 10s at £1.75, Aqua Protect 10s at £2.45 and Sensitive Strips 10s at £1.95, and for larger wounds Absorbent Non-Stick Dressings at £2.49 for 5 and Sensitive Adhesive Dressings at £3.69 for 5.
