Body Maintenance
Like any good machine the body will, if not looked after or maintained properly, break down. Ignoring the signs can lead to major system failure and leaving it too long, or not spotting the problems sooner, may result in permanent damage. Carrying out a little maintenance here and there will help. Here we list 3 system elements that will, with a little help from you, run regularly.

Water The Staff of Life
The recommended intake of water, whether still or purified, is 4 glasses per day. When dieting up to 8 glasses (4 pints a day), in whatever form, will help detox you and give the diet a chance.

Cardiovascular System
The biggest single killer, especially in men, is heart disease. Regular exercise and low-fat eating can contribute to lowering the risk. However, minor changes to your life style can also help reduce the risk factor.

Problems:

  • Heart attack: A typical cause is due to a blockage in the coronary artery which starves the heart of oxygen thus causing death to the heart tissue.

  • Congestive Heart failure: Many people, in particular men, have weak hearts. This leads to shortness of breath and exhaustion when only modest physical exertion is made.

  • How to combat this: Funny as it sounds Monday morning is a high-risk time for heart attacks. Monday and the end of the working week are times for disturbances in the heart rhythm. Stress also plays a major role in heart problems. Learning to stay calm and control your reactions helps the heart. Eating the right kind of food also helps. Nuts, for example, are good for you. Extensive studies have shown that eating nuts, in particular walnuts, fights prospective heart disease. However, whilst good for you in moderation they will not suit everybody. But they are healthier than most snacks.

Respiratory System
More than just a simple breathing apparatus the lungs fight off threats from the outside such as allergies and pollutants.

Problems...
Lung Cancer:

Smoking is still the biggest cause of lung cancer. So the solution is easy - GIVE UP - especially if you are pregnant or plan to be. Smoking can damage the unborn baby and retard its development.

Asthma:

There has been a vast increase in the number of asthma sufferers. Not just in children but adults as well. There are now over 3 million asthma patients in the UK, and approximately 1500 die each year as a result of it.

What to do:

Breath clean air - take care of what you breath in. Exercising means an increase of air into the lungs so keep an eye on the weather when following outdoor pursuits. If the pollen count is high keep the exercise to a minimum.

Be tidy:

We are hearing a lot more about dust mites, pollen increases, cockroaches etc. It is believed that these are some of the major causes of asthma. Simple household chores can help reduce these type of allergies. Hoover the bed and use a mattress cover. Change the sheets regularly. Dust with a damp cloth. Open windows in the evening for a couple of hours to help reduce indoor pollutants.

Have a jab:

Studies have shown that having the flu jab can help reduce the risk of suffering with respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia.

Immune System
Where your health is concerned this is the first line of defence. However, not only does it fight against viral and bacterial germs but also cancer and inflammatory processes that can lead to heart and other organ diseases.

Problems...
As we grow older the immune system slows down and ceases to be as efficient as when we are younger. This leaves us more open to diseases and infections. On the other hand it can work too well with an overactive or misdirected immune system leading to allergies and arthritis. Finding the balance is important. Eat healthy, exercise regularly and get a good night sleep.
