Asthma
Over the last ten years or so there seems to have been a huge increase in the number of children suffering from Asthma. The causes of Asthma are generally known but the reasons why certain children
suffer and others don't is still a mystery. Studies have shown that certain factors affect if a child
is born with Asthma. They include exposure to pollution, smoking mothers and low birth weight.
However research is still ongoing. Asthma is an illness where the sufferer struggles to breathe at times. The condition is normally
manageable with medication except in the most severe cases. Asthma, defined in layman terms, is simply when the windpipe constricts (due to an allergic
reaction), restricting the flow of oxygen into the lungs.
Asthma is triggered by irritants in the atmosphere. The most common factors are smoke, pollution,
physical exercise and cold. These factors tend to affect most asthmatics. However many more suffer
through pollen, dust, animal fur and even certain food substances.
An important note to remember is that certain medication may not be suitable if your child is
asthmatic. Ask your doctor for further details.
What to Do
If you suspect that your child may have Asthma see a doctor as soon as possible.
