Birthmarks

One in ten babies is born with some type of birthmark. Of those, 90% will lose the birthmark by the age of one. It is quite usual for parents to feel guilty in these circumstances and there are a number of support groups available where you can meet other parents in a similar position.

There is no conclusive proof regarding how and why birthmarks occur. In addition there is no proof that this condition is genetic either.

Birthmarks come in many different forms, with varying degrees of colour and size. Some birthmarks can change colour and shape as well.

What to Do

Normally in the first weeks after birth, your child will be seen by a multitude of doctors, mid wives and nurses. If there are any unfamiliar marks, one of these professionals is likely to pick up on it. If you are concerned about any birthmarks, make an appointment with your doctor. In all likelihood, your doctor is likely to refer you to a specialist.
