Coughing

Coughing is ultimately a very basic reflex and is a reaction to an irritation to the airways. The irritation can come from anywhere from the throat to the lungs and the cough is intended to discharge any foreign matter from the body.

If your child is coughing and producing mucus this may be an indication of a cold or minor infection. However if the cough lasts for more than four days you should consult a doctor. If the cough is a dry one and produced mainly at night or in a specific environment it may be an indication that your child has asthma. In which case you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

What to Do

There are a number of methods that can be used to control coughing in a child:

1) Inhale steam:  With young children the best way of doing this is by using a steam filled bathroom.
2) Humidifier: Place a humidifier in your child's bedroom. An easy alternative is to place a wet towel on the
    radiator.
3) Pillows: Give your child an extra pillow to raise their head slightly. Do NOT give a pillow to a child under twelve
    months.
4) Aromatic Oils: Place a couple of drops onto your child's pillow or handkerchief.
5) Avoid triggers: Cold Air, temperature changes and physical exercise will all lead to coughing.
Avoid if this is of concern to you.
