Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is a problem concerning abnormally bowel motions where liquid is passed rather than solids.
Diarrhoea usually starts quite suddenly and without warning. The main symptom relates to stomach
pains which tend to move around the stomach and not remain in any one place.
Diarrhoea can be caused by a number of things. The main offenders are over eating or eating new
foods that may cause a reaction. If your child is also vomiting then you should see a doctor immediately as it is highly likely that
your child has a virus or bowel infection. Otherwise the main problem with Diarrhoea is that it can lead to Dehydration if not properly managed.
The main symptoms of dehydration are as follows:
-
dry lips/ dry mouth
-
no toilet activity - this tends to happen as a result of the body conserving liquids and therefore
-
no urine is produced.
It is highly likely that your child's appetite will be affected and they may not be too hungry.
This is not a problem as long as sugary drinks are being consumed.
What to Do
If dehydrated you should encourage your child to drink lots of sugary fluids.
If your child is still suffering from Diarrhoea after a few days you should go to the doctor
immediately.
After the Diarrhoea has passed you should feed your child simple plain foods. Try to avoid fatty
foods or anything acidic as this will only aggravate the stomach again.
