Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain where the brain cells create unusual electrical currents that cause seizures or uncontrollable jerking movements. Other symptoms include a high level of confusion, muscle spasms, and unconsciousness. Epileptics have repeated instances of seizures over a period of time. Basically, one spasm or seizure does not mean Epilepsy.

People suffering with epilepsy normally have to take medication every day and this does seem to control the seizures. It has been known for epileptics to be cured but this is the decision of the doctor. Under no circumstances stop taking your medication without medical advice.

What to Do

- If your child is having a seizure dial 999 immediately.
- Stay Calm
- Don't try and stop the child moving.
- Move items away from the area if they can possible harm the sufferer.
- Turn your child on their side so that excess liquid can fall form their mouth easily.
- Most seizures are not life-threatening.
- Stay with the sufferer even if they fall asleep.
