Headaches

Headaches are a very common occurrence in children and teenagers. Approximately one fifth (20%) of this group complain of headaches frequently. There are a number of different types of headaches and again it should be stressed that the huge majority of headaches clear up after a couple of hours. However some headaches do signify something more serious. If your child is woken up at night by a headache or if a headache lasts for a couple of days call your doctor. In addition if your child complains that the pain is getting worse or is vomiting contact your doctor.

What to Do

In most cases simple over the counter medication will solve most headaches. Always follow the relevant dosage instructions for your child and never exceed the recommended dose.

If the headaches persist go to your doctor as soon as possible. You should also keep a diary of what things may trigger the headaches in your child - it could be any one of a number of factors including certain foods, stress, eyesight problems, tooth ache, lack of sleep and so on.
