Scabies

Scabies is a skin disease caused by a tiny mite. The mite burrows into the skin, normally in the region of the hands or feet. Itching arises due to an allergic reaction against the mite and small slightly raised red spots appear. This can spread to other members of your family.

Please also note that the red rash extends far further over the body than the initial mite. Diagnosis can sometimes be made more difficult due to the similarity with other skin conditions. However if more than one member of your family has the rash, this is a bit of a give away!

What to Do

Consult your doctor.
There are lotions readily available which will cure the rash. However be aware that although these lotions may cure the rash and kill the mite they do not remove the mite from your skin. The mite is broken down by your bodies defences over a period of time which means that there may be still be itchiness some time after the rash has disappeared.
