Sore Throat

Most sore throats are caused by minor viral infections that normally last 4-5 days before the sufferer recovers fully. It is very common for the lymph glands to be swollen - don't worry, this is very normal.

What to do

In most cases you will not need to visit a doctor and the sore throat can be cured quite easily with a little rest, throat lozenges and paracetamol. However if the sufferer has some of the following symptoms you should consult a doctor;

- The sore throat lasts longer than 5 days with no sign of improvement.
- There is difficulty in breathing.
- The swelling is not equal on both sides of the throat but considerably larger on one side.
- There is a discharge at the back of the throat.
- There are white or yellow spots visible at the back of the throat.
