Teething

In the huge majority of cases, teething causes no problems whatsoever. The symptoms for teething are so minor (the temperature rise is negligible, your child becomes more irritable) that any other symptom can almost be attributed to an illness NOT teething.

What to Do

- Use a teething gel. Apply to dummy and watch the pain and crying stop INSTANTLY!!!
- You do need to check with your doctor first to check as there are active ingredients in the gel.
- This only provides temporary relief.
- You can also use cooled water to relieve the pain or paracetamol (recommended dosage).
- There are teething toys available as well.

Teething Schedule

At around six months, The first teeth to appear are normally the two lower central incisors. These are followed by the two upper central incisors. Teeth then develop at approximately one a month. A rough guideline to teeth development is listed below:

- 6 months - 4 central incisors
- 8 months - 4 side incisors
- 10 - 14 months - 4 back molars
- 16-20 months - 4 canines
- 24-30 months - 4 more back molars

Not all children teeth at the same rate. Everyone progresses at a different rate. Do not worry if your child still has no teeth when they have passed their first birthday. This bears no relation at all to healthy teeth in the future.
