Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are one of the most exciting areas that
Improve are working on.
We are currently reviewing and updating the Apprenticeship
Frameworks to make sure that they are relevant to the needs
of employers and in line with the requirements of the fast
moving food and drink industry.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme for
young people. Apprentices learn through a combination of on
and off the job education and training.
Improve have several apprenticeship frameworks approved for:
· Bakery
· Food and drink manufacturing
· Meat and poultry
Whether you are an industry employer, employee, or whether
you are looking to start a career in the food and drink then
apprenticeships will be relevant to you .
Improve produces a quarterly newsletter called The Source
dedicated to bringing you all the most up to date news on
apprenticeships in the UK.

What is a Young Apprenticeship?
A Young Apprenticeship is an exciting new learning programme
for 14-16 year olds. The programme is designed for year 10
and 11 pupils who would like to follow a vocational
programme of learning as an alternative to traditional
academic/class based study.
Pupils continue to study the National Curriculum three days
per week and then spend an average of two days per week on
the Young Apprenticeship programme, in a variety of learning
settings, which includes studying for vocational
qualifications and 50 days work experience.
Why food and drink?
The food and drink industry is huge. It has a turnover of
over £66 billion each year, employs over 650,000 people
across the UK, in more than 30,000 businesses. As you might
expect with an industry of this size and scale, the
opportunities to get involved and work in food and drinks
manufacturing are both widespread and varied. By 2012 the
food and drink industry will need to recruit almost 200,000
extra employees to fill job vacancies as the existing
workforce retires. It’s a good reason why young people
should consider a career in this industry. To find out more

Why Our Employers Value Apprenticeships
Young Apprenticeships are designed in partnership with Industry
employers. This means they reflect what employers want from
recruits in the food and drink industry.
-
They help employers to recruit and train young people and reduce
skills gaps and shortages. By developing pupils on the Young
Apprenticeship in Food and Drink Manufacturing, training
providers and employers can work towards filling skills gaps and
skills shortages.
-
The Young Apprenticeship can enable employers to identify
potential recruits to their workforce and/or learners to
undertake apprenticeship and advanced apprenticeship programmes.
-
The YA can help employers to build strong educational links
with schools and local training providers and provide
opportunities to experience and feedback on the content and
delivery of suitable training programmes and help inform schools
of vocational needs at work.
Please note
that the food and drink Young Apprenticeship programme will
be piloted in England from September 2006 in certain regions.
