Working in Food Manufacturing
The food and drinks industry is huge. It has a turnover of over £66
billion each year, employs over 650,000 people across the UK, in
more than 30,000 businesses. As you might expect with an industry of
this size and scale, the opportunities to get involved and work in
food and drinks manufacturing are both widespread and varied.
Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme for young
people aged between 16 and 24 years of age. It provides them with
the first step towards a long-term career. If you are an employer

Learning Products and Services
The on-going development of skills is the single most important
factor in determining business success in today’s rapidly evolving
and constantly changing global economy.
Ensuring that everyone in a business - from senior management to the
most junior shop floor operative - has the right level of skills and
knowledge, is the only way to guarantee that productivity and
profitability are maintained and the business remains sustainable.
Meeting the skills gap will ensure your business is best placed to
respond to the many challenges that it will face both now and in the
foreseeable future.
Consequently, Improve are developing a range of learning materials
that have been specifically designed by specialists from within the
food and drink sector to help companies of any size address the
question of skills development.
Improve are also closely involved in the Cross Sector work of the
Skills for Business Network, established by the Sector Skills
Development Agency to address skills issues that are common to all
sectors of industry within the UK.
These include areas such as Management & Leadership, IT,
Sustainability and Employability. The benefits of this work will be
available on the Improve web site.
