History
Interflora began 80 years ago in America, two florists
agreed to telegraph each other with requests because
their flowers could not survive the four-day train
journey needed for delivery. It was in 1920 that
Interflora took off in the UK, when a florist in Glasgow
and a nurseryman in Essex decided to expand their
business and so decided to join the American Association
as foreign members. There were 17 members by 1923, which
was enough to form a British unit, in 1953 name changed
to Interflora.
Now Interflora is the world’s largest flower delivery
network. In 2005 Interflora decided to change from a
trade association to a private company due to the
increase in competition within the market. This change
was a success and has seen the introduction of an
external venture capitalist, 3i as a majority
shareholder and allows major investment for the future
good of Interflora, our members and our customers.
