Introduction to Floristry

Floristry is also known as flower arranging, it is the art of creating banquets and compositions from flowers, herbs, foliages, ornamental grasses and other botanical materials into floral designs.

A person who arranges the flowers is called a florist. There are various skills entailed in floristry, knowing how to cut, treat and arrange flowers, knowing which flowers would look best together and also keeping the flowers fresh is important. Knowing how to form wreaths and other important arrangements are also crucial for special occasions.

There are customer expectations and requirements involved with floristry, with customers often purchasing flowers for special occasions such as Christmas, Valentines Day, Funerals and Weddings. Although occasions make up a large part of the business, the sale of house plants and flowers are a much more constant.

There are many different factors which may affect flower arranging, each season brings different colours and different flowers, fashions change from time to time resulting the demand for certain flowers changing and holidays and events may increase the demand for a certain type of flower, such as poppies which represent the fallen soldiers only in England and Commonwealth countries.
