What we do
The IWF works with a partnership of Internet Service Providers,
Telecommunication Companies, Mobile Operators, Software Providers, UK
Government Departments such as the Home Office and the Department of Trade
and Industry and the Public to aim to minimise the availability of online
illegal content, primarily child abuse images, criminally obscene and racist
content and to also foster trust, confidence and reassurance in the Internet
for current and future users.
Fundamentally, the IWF manage the only authorised ‘hotline’ in the UK that
enables the public to report instances of any illegal child abuse images
hosted anyway in the UK or racist content hosted in the UK that they come
across online.
We also provide a ‘notice and take down’ service to ISPs in the UK This
means that ISPs can potentially detect and delete illegal content/images
from their servers. We then can work with the Law Enforcement Agencies in
order to trace the offenders to stop this content from being accessed.
The IWF assist the law enforcement in the fight against criminal content on
the network by passing on details of reports on illegal content/images that
are found on servers in and outside the UK to the relevant national hotline
or UK Law Enforcement Agency.
The IWF work directly with the Police,
providing all their resources and information in order to trace the
individuals that are responsible for such crimes online.
