The principal course is a two day one though each day can be seen as self contained if necessary. Although the days are broken up into sessions for reasons of comfort each day should be seen as a continuum of delivery and the subdivisions are flexible. The times may vary from venue to venue.


Day 1 – Planning
Session 1 9.00 – 11.00
• The nature of the task
• A calendar for the timetabling process

• The potential value and limitations of computer software
• The planned use of staff time
• Planning in the context of a hypothetical school
Session 2 11.15 – 1.15
• Elements of the curriculum plan – setting, banding, blocking, populations, staffing
• Curriculum plans for the three Key Stages
• Testing the feasibility of the curriculum plan
Session 3 2.00 – 4.00
• Costing the Curriculum Plan
• Reconciling the Curriculum Plan with the budget
• Fitting staff to the curriculum plan – deployment, combing
• An examination of the constraints which inhibit delivery

Day 2 – Construction

Session 1 9.00 – 11.00
• Familiarisation with today’s hypothetical school
• Essential areas of flexibility
• The clash matrix
Session 2 11.15 – 1.15
• Setting a good structure at KS4&5
• Is real time the best medium in which to timetable?
• How can the arithmetic of the option blocks be used to induce stability and robustness
Session 3 1.45 – 4.00
• KS3 – departmental or whole school?
• Team based activities at KS3
• Recognising priorities and accepting compromise
• Class based activities at KS3
