About NASUWT

Introduction
NASUWT is the only TUC-affiliated teachers’ union to represent teachers in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.  NASUWT is not linked to any political party.  It makes no donations directly or indirectly.  Furthermore, it is linked to other national and international trade union organisations and represented on a wide range of professional, educational and advisory bodies.

Structure
The structure of the organisation consists of a number of different levels across the entire United Kingdom.

Local Associations
Union representation at a local level.

Federations
If there is more than one local association within any LEA then those local association combine to form a Federation.

Regional Executive Councils
At a regional level, the local associations and federations combine to form Regional Executive Councils. They are NASUWT Scotland, NASUWT Cymru and NASUWT Northern Ireland.

National Officers’ Committee
The following individuals form the membership of the National Officers’ Committee and are known as the National Officers of the Association.

  • The Junior Vice-President

  • The Senior Vice-President

  • The President

  • The Ex-President

  • The Honorary Treasurer

The National Executive
The National Executive comprises of the members of the National Officers’ Committee and not more than 41 members elected to represent the districts of the Association. (Currently there are 34 districts covering England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland).

The President
There is an annual election for the role of President which carries a four year term. This means that there are four positions available within the ‘Presidency’. In the first year of office the member elected is known as The Junior Vice-President. In the second year they are known as Senior Vice-President. In the third year they are known as The President and in the fourth year they are known as the Ex-President.

The General Secretary
The General Secretary is responsible for the day to day business of the Association and follows the decisions of Conference, The National Executive and the National Officers’ Committee.

Honorary Treasurer
The Honorary Treasurer is responsible for the financial affairs of the Association.

Trustees
The Junior Vice-President, the Senior Vice-President, the President and the Ex-President are the trustees.

Conference
Conference is normally held during the school Easter holidays. This is where all major policy decisions are discussed and voted on.
