Skin ageing may be due to the natural ageing process but it can be accelerated by external influences, especially by the sun’s harmful UVA / UVB rays. Over time fine lines and wrinkles appear, the skin becomes drier due to a lack of moisture and lipids, it loses elasticity and looks less radiant and its texture becomes uneven. Although you can’t stop the ageing process itself, there are ways to help skin retain its youthful appearance; give it extra moisture, protect your skin from the sun, stop smoking, drink plenty of water every day and use special anti-ageing skincare products.  The NIVEA VISAGE range of anti-ageing products has been specially developed to suit you and your skin’s needs to help combat the ageing process.

There are three factors which cause our skin to age: biological ageing, external influences and everyday facial expressions.

Biological ageing
Just like all our bodily organs, the skin also ages over the years and becomes increasingly more demanding. The speed with which ageing occurs is often determined genetically. Here is a brief overview of the skin’s biological ageing process:

As early as the age of 25 our skin shows the first signs of ageing: its moisture barrier decreases, the skin gets drier, fine lines appear.

Around the age of 35 levels of the powerful “initiator” for producing cell energy, coenzyme Q10, decrease – wrinkles appear and remain.

At 40+ years of age the skin’s own papillae structure further diminishes, skin looses firmness and elasticity.

Mature skin of women over 50 shows even more symptoms of dryness, rapid moisture loss, reduced elasticity and increased sensitivity. All of this is due to a different metabolism and a reduced sebum production (both being primarily hormone-related).

External influences
UV light activates oxygen, forming free radicals. These small unstable molecules attack cell walls. They can change the genetic make-up in the cells’ nuclei, diminishing the quality of newly created cells. They can also weaken collagen and elastin fibres which support the connective tissue. The result: the skin becomes rough and dry, loses firmness and wrinkles form.

Facial Expressions
A lot of facial wrinkles arise from an individual’s everyday facial expressions. If someone laughs a lot, for example, laughter lines will appear in time around the mouth and eyes.
