The UVA and UVB rays from the sun cause sunburn and premature skin ageing.  The use of sunscreens can help to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. The explanations given below are designed to explain some of the more commonly used jargon.

Anti-Oxidants – Substances that can neutralise free radicals.  Important anti-oxidants are Vitamins C and E.

Dermatologically Approved - Formulations and test data that have been reviewed and approved by a dermatologist

Water Resistant / Extra Water Resistant / Long-Lasting Water Resistant – Designed to be resistant to water for at least 40, 80 and120 minutes respectively, offering you longer lasting protection.

Free Radicals – Unstable reactive molecules that can cause damage to healthy cells. Free radicals produced as a consequence of exposure to UV light and other environmental factors like pollution ; break down the skin’s fibrous support structures – collagen and elastin – which triggers premature ageing and even skin cancer.

Polymorphic Light Eruption (PLE) – a skin reaction to the sun resulting in raised red lumps, which appear after sun exposure in the same area of the body time after time. It can be reduced by good coverage of a high factor sunscreen. It is not prickly heat.

Prickly Heat – A rash caused by blocked sweat glands, usually occurring on areas covered by clothing.  Tends to be confused with the much more common PLE.

SPF – Sun Protection Factor - The most common way for suncare products to be categorised. The higher the factor the greater the protection from burning, given that sufficient product is applied regularly and it is not used to increase the amount of time you spend in the sun.

UV -  Ultra Violet Rays – Part of the sun’s light ‘spectrum’.  The sunlight which reaches the Earth is made up of UVA and UVB rays. In general UVB rays are responsible for sun burn and UVA rays are responsible for premature skin ageing.  Always use a sunscreen with UVA and UVB filters as both types of rays are associated with skin cancer.

Vitamin C – (Ascorbic Acid) is an essential vitamin that cannot be made by the body.  It is present in fresh fruit and vegetables, and is indispensable for healthy skin.

Vitamin E – (Tocopheryl) is oil soluble, and easily absorbed.  It is essential for the protection of the body’s cellular membranes.

Water Resistant - Designed to be resistant to water for at least 40 minutes.

Clinically Tested – Formulations and tests that have been reviewed and carried out in a clinical environment.
