Our community programmes and world-wide corporate
responsibility activities, are designed to support and
sustain innovative ideas that will improve the quality
of life and will advance solutions, to issues of
shared concern to Pfizer and the communities in which
we operate.
Over many years Pfizer has built a reputation for
being committed to the community. Pfizer plays an
active role in making every country and community in
which we operate a better place to live and work. We
believe in working partnerships where we can share our
knowledge, time and resources to produce results at
both local and national level that make a difference.

Community Initiatives
At our main sites at Sandwich, Kent and Walton Oaks,
Surrey, we aim to work closely with many diverse
charitable, local organisations and statutory
agencies. We undertake a number of programmes, which
reflect the commitment of the company and its
employees to the community value.

Priority is given to the areas of Health, Science and
Education around the main sites.
Community Donations and Initiatives
Pfizer has maintained a charitable donations and
sponsorship programme for more than 45 years, making
over 10,000 contributions to many local and national
causes.
During 2003, Pfizer donated over £6 million to a wide
range of local and national charities, educational
establishments and a variety of scientific projects.
In 2004, Sandwich gave over £300,000 to local
community projects and charities in the East Kent
area.
Pfizer also works actively within the community by
offering gifts in kind such as the use of meeting
rooms, print /copy equipment and transport facilities.
Pfizer employees are also extremely generous in
offering their time to share their skills and
experience to local schools and projects.
Initiated at the Walton Oaks site, the Local Community
Liaison Committee was formed to enable Pfizer to
listen to any local concerns and help develop positive
links in the local community. A similar committee is
now been convened at the Sandwich site. In addition,
Pfizer also deliver free, to the local area
surrounding their sites in Sandwich and Walton Oaks, a
community newsletter, sharing information about Pfizer
as a company and their links in the area.
Educational Support
Education is also very important to Pfizer, and the
company runs an Academic Liaison Programme,
predominantly in East Kent, that is designed to
encourage schools and colleges to adopt exciting and
innovative approaches to the teaching of science.
Currently over 200 local schools in Kent are supported
by Pfizer as part of the Academic Liaison Programme.
These are supported through the provision of cash
grants for science projects, a work experience
programme, curriculum-based visits and special events
and the encouragement of excellence in science
teaching through the "Link Scientist Scheme" and, at a
national level, sponsorship of the " Pfizer Primary
Teaching Science Awards". Staff at all levels across
the company are encouraged to participate in the
company’s award-winning mentoring scheme. In the area
around Walton Oaks, work has begun in establishing a
similar schools programme.
In 2002, being a “Friend of Science”, Pfizer
contributed £400,000 towards the government’s Science
Year initiative – encouraging the development of
science education in both primary and secondary
schools. The money went towards supporting continuing
professional development for science teachers, as well
as providing £10,000 worth of the latest biotechnology
equipment to the top 35 teacher training institutes in
the UK. This programme will allow colleges to provide
hands on biotechnology training for new science
teachers, and to use the equipment with hundreds of
their local sixth form pupils.
Volunteering & Employee Donations
Pfizer Limited is keen to support local community
initiatives and charitable organisations through many
channels, especially those initiated by Pfizer staff
themselves. Volunteering at Pfizer has a long history
and the company encourages volunteering in support of
the Community Value.
For example, staff are offered paid leave to volunteer
their time to local charitable organisations as well
as having the opportunity to donate regularly to a
charity of their choice through the Give As You Earn
(GAYE) scheme, where their contributions to UK
charities are matched by Pfizer. Currently the
combined, annual donation is nearly £400,000.
