Science is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many experiments that require the use of hazardous chemicals. Safety in the science classroom is the number 1 priority for students, teachers, and parents.

To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in this student safety contract. These rules must be followed at all times.

  • Always wear a lab apron and goggles when you work with chemicals, hot liquids, or other materials that could harm you.
  • Do NOT wear nylon or polyester in the laboratory when we are working with chemicals or heat.
  • Always wear closed shoes during labs to protect your feet from spills.
  • If you spill chemicals on your clothing or skin, wash IMMEDIATELY with plenty of water to dilute and remove the substance.
  • Always alert your teacher to any spills on your skin or clothing.
  • Never taste or smell ANY chemicals unless your teacher tells you it is safe to do so.
  • Tie or pin long hair back to avoid contact with flame or chemicals.
  • No food, drink or gum in the laboratory.
  • Always know where the fire blanket, extinguisher, eye wash and shower are, and how to use them in an emergency.
  • Be sure you know how to use equipment before beginning an experiment. If you are unsure - ASK!
  • Do not run in the science lab
