Want to become a Painter & Decorator? Don’t want to spend months training? Now you can get a government-recognised professional qualification in only four weeks. Just think: in one month you could set up your very own decorating business.

Until now, young people wanting to train as Painters & Decorators have had to complete lengthy NVQ courses. These are costly in terms of both time and loss of income while studying, and if you are lucky enough to get an apprenticeship you are likely to be the general labourer for the first six months to a year.

But an Essex based training company has come up with a new way to learn this highly sought-after trade. PTS TRAINING LTD offers intensive training programmes that are flexible: Their most popular course is the 4 week City & Guild P&D course. One week modules are also available including painting, wallpapering, coving & special effects, and interior décor. No other vocational training in the UK offers such flexibility. Each trainee can select from a ‘pick and mix’ of modules.

What’s more, PTS courses are City and Guild accredited. This means they are officially recognised and they provide an extremely high level of skill and expertise. As a result, a staggering 85% of PTS trainees end up using their trade as their main source of income.

With a forecasted 87,000 new trades people needed every year to cope with the demand of the 2012 Olympics*, it is important that they are trained to the high standards that PTS set.

PTS’ unique courses also provide a cost-effective way for employers to ensure apprentices earn their wages from day one. PTS train many school leavers, and on completion of a course they can immediately work on site as part as a professional team. With the general UK shortage of apprenticeships, a PTS qualification is a very attractive step-ahead for school leavers.

The one week programmes cover paint effects, wallpapering, coving, textures surfaces and themed rooms. The two and four week programmes are designed for those who wish to gain a complete professional finish, and to develop their standard and accuracy of work to a professional level. Another critical part of the four-week course is the business start-up programme. This teaches trainees how to run and market a business successfully.

George Lidington, a director of PTS, says: “Our courses have proved so valuable to kick-start careers that many apprentices (or their mums and dads!) are happy to pay for some of the costs themselves in order to make themselves more marketable. However, some contractors will offer to refund the cost of the course as they see the value in having a workforce at maximum productivity in the minimum time.

“By completing a PTS course first, trainees are immediately capable of earning their wages.”

PTS also offer similarly designed intensive tiling courses.
