Teenagers smoke for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, although many find smoking tobacco to be enjoyable, it is a very deadly habit. Smoking when you’re a teenager, or before you reach your teens, is very, very, very, very dangerous. That’s because it causes permanent genetic damage. It puts you at high risk of lung cancer – and for girls, breast cancer – for life, even if you quit when you’re still young. And the younger you start, the harder it’ll be for you to stop later. So, if you’re thinking about smoking for a few years, then quitting, and you think that that’ll keep you safe, think again.

Some of the reasons teenagers choose to smoke are:

peer pressure.
low self esteem.
wanting to be "cool".
a desire to keep weight down.
a parent or close relative smokes.

According to research, teenagers get hooked easily, and it's hard for them to break the habit because they are under a lot of peer pressure to keep smoking.  The most important element in quitting smoking is that the teen must truly desire to quit, and consideration of some of the benefits of quitting may encourage him or her to do so.
