Shakespeare Comic Book Series

Was Shakespeare a genius? Is his work just dull? Are modern students too stupid to understand him? Of course. Of course not. Emphatically not.

Shakespeare was the greatest genius Britain has produced. What he wrote shapes our language and colours our thoughts. Characters he created still live with us. But nobody said genius was easy. English has evolved over the last 400 years. Words have shifted meaning or become obsolete and some of Shakespeare’s lines are incomprehensible.

That’s not a reason to give up on him. It is the reason we’ve found new ways to present his plays. Firstly, our versions are edited. This means that while we’ve retained key speeches, some of the more obscure speeches or tedious passages of action have been cut.

Secondly, we provide a modern English translation of Shakespeare’s lines. This ensures that where his text becomes impossible to follow, our simplified version helps out.

Thirdly, all the plays we produce are presented in comic book format. This means readers are throughout supported by pictures that give clues to historical period, physical setting and emotional temperature. They’re also fun to look at.

The Shakespeare Comic Book Series has become an established introduction to Shakespeare, on sale at the Royal Shakespeare Company store and the Shakespeare Bookshop, both in Stratford. The books are on sale through outlets in America, Australia and Canada and sell to all parts of the world through our website.

Most importantly, the Shakespeare Comic Books sell into primary and secondary schools. Are modern students too stupid to understand Shakespeare? Definitely not! But at a time when children are more used to visual images than the written word, there is a need to find new approaches to his work. The Shakespeare Comic Book Series is one of the best.

Present titles include: The Tempest, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Henry V and Twelfth Night. To view sample pages and for more information, please visit our website.

Teaching Shakespeare - Teacher's Books and SATs revision guide

Each title in The Shakespeare Comic Book Series is accompanied by a Teacher's Book. These cover all aspects of Shakespeare study including sections on character, language and structure, as well as each play's cultural context and follow up activities.

We also offer a SATs revision guide featuring a complete dual text version of the two examined scenes. With this, the A4 booklet contains comprehension questions, exam tips and essay questions (with answers!). See our website for more details.
