14-19 Specialist Diploma

In September 2007, the Government will be introducing a new qualification called the 14-19 Specialist Diploma in Creative and Media.

The aim of the Diploma is to give you the skills you need to get a job in a range of creative and media industries.

The Diploma is aimed at young people aged between 14 and 19 years old, and you can study for it at school.

There are two unusual aspects to the Diploma.  The first thing is that employers have helped to decide what you learn, so you know you will be learning things that really will help you to understand the creative and media sector, and prepare you for getting a good job.

The other unusual aspect is that the Diploma combines academic study (the type
of learning you might do for an “A” level, for example) with vocational study

(the kind of real-life industry skills that you might learn if you were doing an NVQ).

The Specialist Diploma for Creative & Media will be ready for students to study in September 2008.  Then, in 2009, there will be another Specialist Diploma in Manufacturing.  It may seem like a long way away, but if you are thinking about
what you need to do to get a good job in clothing, footwear and textiles, then it’s worth knowing what’s coming up!
