National Occupational
Standards
National Occupational Standards (or NOS) set out
what employees should be able to do in a particular
type of job. For example, the National Occupational
Standards for footwear operatives explain the
knowledge and skills that an employee working in a
footwear company should be able to demonstrate, and
that an employer should be able to expect.
NOS are important because they go hand-in-hand with
vocational qualifications such as NVQs (or SVQs in
Scotland). In fact, the contents of an NVQ or SVQ
qualification are based on skills and experience
that is listed in the National Occupational
Standard.

As a Sector Skills Council, Skillfast-UK
“owns” the National Occupational Standards
for the areas of clothing, footwear and
leather, textiles, sector-relevant design
and laundry/dry-cleaning. We work very
closely with employers to keep NOS
up-to-date, so that we have standards and
qualifications that are “fit-for-purpose”,
and don’t waste your time working towards a
qualification that either doesn’t reflect
what you really need to know, or isn’t
valued by your current or future employer.
If you work in the industry now, or are
thinking of taking up a job in the sector,
you may find NOS useful, because the
standards can help you to understand what an
employer will expect from you in a
particular role. In fact, many employers use
the information in the NOS to create job
descriptions for their company, and as the
“benchmark” for appraisals.
