The HM Courts career guidance is a link to the Department for Constitutional Affairs volunteering strategy which encourages the public and staff to get involved with volunteering. Brief details are given on the main grades recruited: Bailiff, Court Usher, Administrative Officer and Administrative Assistant. Current vacancies for these career opportunities are easily accessible.

As well as outlining what the Prison Service has to offer - including a detailed list of benefits for example final salary pension and extensive range of training - the site outlines the minimum eligibility requirements, the role and duties of a prison officer, the process of becoming a prison officer, how to apply and current vacancies with a handy job alert sign up to receive notification when jobs are placed on the website. Information seems fairly comprehensive and accessible with the focus on prison officers rather than support staff.

The Scottish Prison Service provides information on how to become a Prison Officer, current vacancies and Nursing Careers. The prison officer information is described in some detail, with the role of the prison officer outlined as well as key competencies and qualifications needed, salary and benefits, training and development, how to apply and the selection process. Regarding choosing a career within nursing, the roles of various positions are outlined, plus the salary and benefits.

The document 'An informative guide featuring careers, information, interviews with Probation staff and an up-to-date look at Probation work' is available to download from the National Probation Service website.

This career guide gives an up-to-date review of the NPS work and describes three careers in Probation, those of the: Trainee Probation Officer, Probation Service Officer and Supervisor.

Individual probation consortium contains recruitment information at a local level, for example, Probation North West Consortium www.probation-northwest.co.uk. This information includes definition and job purpose as well as main duties and responsibilities. There is also a guide to that particular consortium area and the academic study and practice based work available for trainees.

An easily accessible section of the website provides an introduction to careers at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) in Scotland and a general outline of the kind of jobs available. COPFS staff have written about the work they do, in both administrative and legal positions, to give a good overview of the job for prospective employees.
The range of benefits available to staff are outlined, including generous annual leave, flexible working hours and a generous pension scheme and the recruitment policy statement shows the COPFS is an equal opportunity employer and provides details of the Investors in People status achieved in 1996.
Detailed information is provided regarding legal traineeships and this is translated into various languages included Arabic and Chinese.

The three main areas of work at the Crown Prosecution Service in England and Wales are: prosecutor, caseworker and administration. The site supplies a brief outline of what the job involves plus qualifications and skills needed for the post. A list of benefits includes the opportunity to gain experience from different functions or to specialise in a particular area and membership of the Sports and Social Club, set up to encourage sporting and social activities for the benefit of staff in the CPS, as well as the usual flexible working, pension scheme, and annual leave.

The Public Prosecution Service for Northern Ireland contains a link to the Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) Recruitment Service website (www.nicsrecruitment.gov.uk ). This website contains a wealth of information on the job opportunities within the civil service. Current vacancies also include sandwich course placements and short-term opportunities and an events calendar shows the next careers /graduate job fairs. Access to the 'Recruitment Service Policy & Procedures Manual' provides advice and guidance for applicants and the 'Charter Service' document provides a brief guide to the work of the NICS and the services it provides.

A core competence framework describes the relevant skills and the associated behaviours that an employee would be expected to demonstrate. This is available by grade from Senior Civil Service to Administrative positions.
