The idea behind Staples started with a broken printer ribbon in
America just under 20 years ago.
Former supermarket chain executive turned entrepreneur, Tom
Stemberg, was working on a new business venture when his printer
ribbon broke. It was Fourth of July weekend, 1985, and his local
stationer was closed.
Stemberg went to a local wholesale retailer but the store didn’t
have the correct ribbon and had very limited stock - only 100 or
so different office supply products.
Tom thought of an idea - a superstore for office supplies where
small businesses and consumers can obtain the products they need
at the same discount prices that were only usually available to
large corporations purchasing in large quantities. |
