Hopefully you now have a better
understanding of how to search the web for information that you
want.
However, it is also important
to know how to use the information that you have been searching for. There
are a number of ways of using this information, all of which you will
learn about this section.
You
may want to keep the information you have seen on the computer screen. One
way of doing this is by printing the web page you are looking at. This is
very easy to do (as long as you have a printer!) and gives you a “hard
copy” of the information on the web page.
Read
these instructions very carefully, because you will need to remember them
to print pages in the future.
1) When you are looking at a web page that you would like to print,
make sure that your printer is turned on, has paper and is ready to
print.
2)
Press the Print button.
Depending on which browser you have, a new window might appear
which will let you choose your printer’s settings. You should just press OK if this
happens (unless you are told otherwise).
3) Now that you know how to print a web page, why not try and print
this page so that
you have the instructions to keep.
Printing is great if you want the whole page of information
(remember that a page on the web can be lots of pages of paper) but you
may want just some of the page. You may also want to save some information
on your computer. One way of doing this is to copy text from the web site.
Your
computer has lots of memory, which it uses to remember things. One very special part of this
memory is called the Clipboard.
You can use the Clipboard to store text and other important
things.
This is the sentence that I want to copy into the Clipboard.
1)
Move your mouse pointer to the start of the sentence.
2) Click and HOLD down the left button.
3) While you are still holding the button down, move the mouse to the
end of the sentence.
4) When you are at the end of the sentence you can let go of the
button.
5) Now the text should be highlighted. Click on EDIT on the menu
at the top of your screen and choose COPY. The text will now be copied into
the clipboard where your computer will remember it, until you want to use it
again.
6)
Now you can test yourself to see if you copied it correctly. Click inside the space below. Then click on EDIT on the
menu and choose PASTE. Your computer should copy the sentence above
from the Clipboard into the box.
One
very important point to remember is that if you had your web browser and
word processor open at the same time, you could copy text from a web page
and paste them into a word processor document. This would let you make a
collection of researched information, which you could use to help you with
a school project.
Copying text is great, but the World Wide Web is not just about
text. It would be very boring
if all web sites only contained letter and numbers. Web pages also contain lots of
pictures and animations to make them interesting to their
readers.
You
can also save pictures and animations so that you can use them in other
projects.
| Follow
these instructions to save the picture on the right onto your
computer: |
 |
1)
Move the mouse pointer over the middle of the picture.
2)
Click on the picture with the RIGHT mouse button.
3)
Now choose “Save Image as” or “Save Picture as” from
the menu, which appears.
4)
Your computer will now ask you where you want to save the
picture. If the computer you
are using is not your own, you should ask the owner where this picture can
be saved.
5)
When you have found a place to save the picture, click on SAVE and
your picture will be saved!
If you wanted to use this picture in your work, you should load it
from the place where it was saved.
