Earache
Earache is a very common problem in children, but it is important to note that it does not
necessarily mean that your child has an ear infection. The ears, nose and throat are all very closely linked and the cause of the earache could stem from any of these.
The simplest form of earache comes from a pressure build up within the ear but this can be solved
with over the counter ear drops. If the earache seems continuous and the child also has a fever / temperature this does suggest an
ear infection. The same is true in babies.
Hearing can be dulled by earache but should return to normal within a short period of time.
What to do
If the earache has not settled after 24 hours or if you suspect a 'true' ear infection see your
doctor immediately. If there is any discharge from the ear see your doctor immediately.
If the hearing is affected over a period of time obviously see your doctor without delay.
