Scarlet Fever

Scarlet fever is a skin infection caused by bacteria. The first symptoms are normally a sore and red throat and a high temperature and fever. The characteristic rash typically appears on the head and neck first, leaving a clear area around the mouth. It then spreads down the rest of the body. The rash is red in colour and consists of tiny red bumps. The rash generally fades by the sixth day of illness. The rash appears on the second day of the throat infection and the fever will diminish on the third day after the rash. The incubation period for Scarlet Fever is 2 to 7 days after exposure.

Scarlet Fever is contagious and your child should be kept away from other children (including your own).

What to Do

Consult your doctor.
Encourage your child to gargle if they have a very sore throat.
Ensure your child drinks lots of liquid, preferably water or squash.
Ensure that your child finishes the antibiotic course
