Why do you need travel insurance?
The AA understands that travel insurance isn’t always top on the list of things to do before your holiday and worryingly many people still travel without it!  Some people think insurance just covers them if they lose their camera or if their baggage is delayed, but in fact it covers much more, like flight delays, cancellations, trip abandonment, personal accident and legal expenses.  One of the most important reasons for travel insurance is medical expenses, if you fall ill whilst on holiday this can be worrying enough without having to wonder how you are going to afford all the doctors and hospital fees.  If you are in America, the bills could well run into thousands of pounds!

If an accident occurs on holiday or you become ill and are hospitalized, you may need someone to stay with you until you’re well enough to return home.  The cost of this can be extremely expensive.  However, with AA Travel Insurance, we will cover the travel and accommodation expenses for one of your travelling party to stay with you until you are well enough to return to the UK.

AA Travel Insurance covers up to £10 million for medical and repatriation expenses
With an AA Travel Insurance policy being as little as £34 for annual multi trip cover when purchased online, every
traveller should be factoring travel insurance in to their holiday budget.  However, it is easy to find cheap policies over the internet from a number of different insurers, but with so many to choose from cheap isn’t necessarily the best option.  You should shop around and ensure the policy you choose provides the correct cover for your specific requirements.

Cover for School Trips
Going on a school trip should be a fun and exciting time for all concerned, but looking after groups of school children can be daunting especially when the trip is overseas.  AA Travel Insurance cover provides a number of high limit cover benefits to ensure that teachers and parents can have peace of mind that their children will be in safe hands in the unfortunate event of something going wrong while they’re away.

EHIC – European Health Insurance Card
The EHIC (the old E111 form) can be used to cover any necessary medical treatment due to either an accident or illness within the European Economic Area (EEA). The card entitles the holder to state-provided emergency medical treatment within the country they are visiting and the service provided will be the same as received by a person covered by the country's 'insured' medical scheme.

This does not necessarily mean that you will receive the same service as the UK’s National Health Service and by now means is the EHIC a replacement for travel insurance.

You can apply for an EHIC from the Department of Health website  or call 0845 606 2030.

Medicare

If you are traveling to Australia or New Zealand and need medical treatment, you must register for treatment under their respective Medicare Scheme.  In-patient and out-patient treatment is at a public hospital is then available free of charge.

Details of how to register and the free treatment available can be found in the “Health Advice to Travellers” booklet available from your local post office.

If you need to go into hospital you will need to contact our 24 hour Emergency Assistance Service provider immediately who will advise you what to do.

Medical Assistance
AA Travel Insurance offers a 24 hour Emergency Assistance Service.  They are available 24 hours a day 365 days a year (366 days in a leap year) from anywhere in the world!

Making a claim
At the AA we advise that you take time to read through the terms and conditions defined in your policy and make sure you have an understanding of what to do in the unfortunate event of something going wrong whilst you are on holiday.  For instance for the loss or theft of personal possessions you will be required to report the incident to the Police within 24 hours and obtain a written Police report.  If you familiarize yourself with the correct procedures before you go then making a claim needn’t be hassle!

14 day cooling off period
We will provide a full premium refund if, for any reason the policy you have bought does not suit your particular needs (within 14 days of purchase provided that a claim has not arisen and travel has not commenced).

Full details of cover, terms and conditions and the policy wording are available on our website at AAtravelinsurance.com
