A Bright Future for our
Bright Children
What is the National Association for Gifted Children?
NAGC is a national charity whose mission is
|
 |
To provide help, support and
encouragement to gifted and talented children and their families and all
others involved in their education and welfare.
To increase national and international awareness of high ability and the
understanding of the emotional, social and educational needs of gifted and
talented young people.
To enable children from all backgrounds, including children with learning
difficulties, to convert their potential into achievement.
The Challenge
The Government has supported gifted and talented initiatives since 1997,
but there is still a long way to go to:
ensure teachers and parents recognise ability and talent
raise schools' expectations of pupils' performance
remove institutional barriers to achievement
Some Solutions
To create a successful future for our able children, all stakeholders must
work together to:
build a culture of achievement in which it is 'cool to be clever'
identify the reasons why children fail to achieve their potential
disseminate best practice to all schools
develop positive partnerships between pupils, parents and schools
encourage open and creative structures in schools which foster
flexibility and originality.
What Can We Offer?
The National Association for Gifted Children supports a membership of
families, schools and individuals and each year members receive the termly
Newsletter and Annual Review. Members are actively encouraged to join a
local branch for mutual support and weekend Explorer's Clubs for the
children. We offer a telephone and email advice and information service
for parents and schools. Our website
www.nagcbritain.org.uk contains a wealth of advice, information and
resources, and increasingly we are publishing a variety if information
booklets on specific aspects of gifted and talented. For young people aged
11 and over NAGC's YouthAgency at
www.youthagency.org.uk provides an on-line forum for bright youngsters
to come together and share resources and information. NAGC also offers a
range of courses for INSET provision, conferences and consultancy.
Finally, we advise policy makers at local and national levels including
LEA's, QCA, OfSTED, and the DfES.
