There are 25,000 deaf children and young people in the UK, and every year a further 1 million children will experience temporary hearing loss because of glue ear. Growing up deaf in a hearing dominated world is often a very challenging experience, and one which can be made harder if families and children are unsupported. The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) is the UK's only charity dedicated solely to supporting all these deaf children and young people, their parents, carers and professionals working on their behalf.

The Society works to ensure that deaf children enjoy the same opportunities as those who can hear, and works towards ending prejudice through education and raising children's expectations, enabling them to gain their rightful acceptance as full members of society.

The NDCS was founded in 1944 by parents, and remains an organisation of parents and carers. The NDCS gives impartial and expert information, advice and advocacy support, supporting families close to their homes, with offices in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and a network of Regional Officers, Local Representatives and Befrienders and 120 affiliated local groups.

The NDCS depends on voluntary donations for well over 90% of its income, and it is only with these generous donations that we are able to continue our important work with and for deaf children. There are a number of ways people can help the NDCS, through personal donations to the Society, by encouraging their schools and businesses to raise money for the NDCS, or by taking part in one of the NDCS exciting challenge events. These range from sponsored abseiling and parachute jumping through to one of the many overseas cycling and trekking challenges. Find out more about individual giving, fundraising hints and ideas, or about the challenge events programme by contacting the Fundraising team at the NDCS on the number below.
