Originally called the British Kinematograph
Society, The Moving Image Society was founded in London, England in 1931
to serve the growing film industry. The name was later changed to the
British Kinematograph Sound and Television Society to reflect the wide
range of interests of the membership and was then to become known as
BKSTS – The Moving Image Society as its membership and the industry
became increasingly international.
As well as meetings, presentations, seminars, international exhibitions
and conferences, BKSTS – The Moving Image Society also organises an
extensive programme of training courses, lectures, workshops and special
events.
With technology constantly changing, the Society offers its members
every opportunity to keep up with the latest developments and to meet
with international experts. Close links are forged and maintained with
other like-minded organisations throughout the world. The Society
regularly publishes Image Technology as well as the unique quarterly
Cinema Technology.
The Society has Membership Grades to suit all applicants. As well as
Full Membership for creatively or technologically working professionals,
we have Associate Membership which is open to those with an interest in
the industry and Student Membership for anyone who is engaged in
full-time study with an intent to progress to a career in the moving
image business.
BKSTS – The Moving Image Society is funded by the subscriptions of its
members and sponsors, and is supported by a permanent staff in the
International Head Office at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom.
Whilst remaining independent of all governmental and commercial
organisations, it is active in fostering co-operation with other
societies in the industry and in promoting its aims throughout the
world.
