Thinktank Brings Science to Life for Young
Minds
|
Thinktank is Birmingham’s
museum of science and discovery. Offering ten galleries over four floors
of interactive, informative exhibits, it is a truly modern museum.
Visitors can investigate everything from locomotives and aircraft to
intestines and taste buds!
|
Thinktank believes that
learning and fun go hand in hand. Whilst the appeal is universal,
school children particularly benefit from the hands-on displays and
interactive environments that really excite young minds. It encourages
children to explore freely, get interactive with the exhibits and add
their own experiences to the wealth of information and interest on
display.
Thinktank offers school
groups a whole range of workshops, shows and special events that link
directly to the national curriculum and your key stage; literacy,
numeracy, design and technology, ICT, history and, of course, science
to name but a few. |
 |
Students are encouraged to
get to grips with forensic science, take part in numeracy and literacy
trails and investigate the wonders of electricity in an interactive show
where the children become atoms and electrons! There are chemical shows,
ICT Mavica camera trails, and even the chance to create a short animation
film.
In addition, the museum houses the biggest educational interactive LEGO
experience outside LEGOLAND Windsor. In our LEGO ® Lab, students and
teachers can try their hand at programming LEGO robots using award winning
Robolab Software.
|
And if that isn’t enough, all
this is alongside ten fascinating themed galleries; they are:
|
Move it
A gallery dedicated to transport. Here students can admire the
suspended hurricane and spitfire aircraft and try their hand at
transporting goods from city to city.
Power Up
Take a tour of some of the most magnificent working steam engines,
including the oldest working example in the world – James Watt’s
Smethwick Beam Engine. |
 |
Making Things
From buttons and buckles to hairgrips and sweet wrappers, explore the
birth of the Industrial Revolution as man and machine meet in the
workplace.
City Stories
This journey through Birmingham’s past starts with its mention in the
Domesday Book of 1086 and brings the visitor right up to the present day,
via the green suburbs and grimy back-street tenements.
|
The Street
Stroll down Thinktank’s weird and wonderful street and discover the
science we all take for granted. Examine the workings of a CD and a
pelican crossing. Children will be amazed at the amount of science and
technology we use in our everyday lives.
Kids in the City
A gallery for under 7s only. Youngsters can explore the water feature,
fix cars in the garage and serve food in the mini café! |
 |
Things About Me
Wrestle with a boneless body, get to grips with your guts then voyage
through veins and ventricles in an amazing exploration of your own body.
Medicine Matters
Take a healthy interest in disease, genetics, surgery and more. Play
Immunity Space Invaders and Musical Genes, perform a virtual hip operation
and wise up on Artificial Intelligence.
|
Wild Life
Why do you never see a polar-bear slip? What’s really odd about the
platypus? How long have crocs been snapping? Join us in the field to
find out how scientists study the wild world and how clever animals
adapt to change.
Futures
The world we live in is changing every day. See how it’s being shaped
by cutting edge technology. From human knowledge and deep space to
micro machines and emotional robots. The Futures Gallery is a
wonderful glance into the future. |
 |
Of course there are many
other important aspects behind a school visit – and Thinktank has it all
in hand. There’s a designated lunch area just for your students, a schools
cloakroom, disabled access throughout and classrooms dedicated solely to
schools. Planning your visit couldn’t be easier; Thinktank offers free
teacher visits, preview evenings and resource packs that clearly lay out
what’s on offer for your key stage.
Whatever you’re looking for from your school
visit, you’ll find it at Thinktank.
