Trumps is one of the most popular children’s games.
Classic titles cover subjects like Ancient Egypt,
Wildlife in Danger, Dinosaurs and Skyscrapers, amongst
others. The Specials range consists of a host of
licensed themes from Roald Dahl and Harry Potter to
Premiership football clubs, Doctor Who and the latest
blockbuster films.
A pack of Top Trumps is a complete and integral game,
unlike many other card games which involve buying many
packs in order to complete a collection.
Top Trumps is one of the toy and game brands most
respected by teachers and parents. Many adults will
remember the hours of entertainment that they derived
from playing Top Trumps when they were young. Top Trumps
is now even better than before. Not only are the images
more exciting and of higher quality but, the cards carry
more fascinating information about the subject being
covered.
Not only does Top Trumps play a subliminal role in
improving literacy skills but it helps children with
numeracy, developing an understanding of the relative
values of numbers and, stimulates interaction through
the gameplay.
A number
of teachers have set their classes projects where the
children create their own sets of Top Trumps. The
children are asked to choose a subject for their pack.
They then have to research their subject using libraries
and the internet. Next they must create a set of
categories on which the game will be based, creating a
database of the statistics that will ascribed to each
category on each card.
Then comes the design stage, choosing images and
creating a layout for the cards. Everything has to be
double-checked to ensure there are no literals or
typographical errors. And, finally the production and,
playing the game.
The most common report from teachers summarising the
success of such a project is, “It was the most popular
project of the year!” says Carl Cliss of Winning Moves,
the creators the game. “I’ve visited a couple of schools
to review the children’s work and tell them about how we
go about producing Top Trumps in the real world and the
question I’m most often asked is ‘How do I get a job at
Top Trumps?’” |
